THE RENAL SERVICE

Renal services at the Leicester General Hospital support one of the largest renal programmes in the UK. We work in partnership with satellite units at Loughborough Hospital, Kettering General Hospital, Lincoln County Hospital and Peterborough District Hospital.

There is also a home care team which provides care to patients in the community who are on or about to commence dialysis treatment.

TREATMENT FOR CHRONIC RENAL PROBLEMS

We provide treatment for acute and chronic renal problems as well as treatment for end-stage renal failure therapy. This includes haemodialysis, continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and renal transplantation.

The first transplant was carried out at Leicester General Hospital more than 30 years ago. The team has since gone on to perform over 100 transplants. The units’ staff has developed specific skills at performing keyhole kidney transplant which reduces recovery time for the live donor.

A small specialist team of transplant coordinators work to support donor families, recipients and those waiting for an organ and educate and increase publicity to raise awareness of organ donation.
